Like everyone else I have been trying to be conscious to eat real food. For me that does me being a little label looker. Not for nutrients but ingredients. Looking for things where they don’t belong. I too sense that there is very little in the way of cereal that you can consume that does not contain copious amounts of sugar in them. So when i was walking down the grocery isle I went back to some old favorites:
Grape Nuts
They aren’t nuts and they aren’t grapes. But I used to eat them as a part of my routine when I was a kid playing hockey. It was the kind of meal that stuck with you even with long workouts. There are sugars in Grape nuts but no sugar.
McCann’s Oatmeal
The stuff is awesome. It has some much flavor you don’t need to add anything. I love this 150 year old product. I first bought the stuff a few years ago when I was going on a camping trip and I was attracted to the metal tin. Again no sugar added, but lots of flavor.
Yeah, I found even a lot of the bulk granola I buy has some sugar way down in the ingredients list. Usually some form of milled cane sugar, which seems less bad than the corn syrup or refined sugar variety, but still probably not good. I found some unsweetend raw muesli with raisins and nuts though which is good. No sugar added.
ReplyDeleteGrape nuts are pretty awesome, I haven't had them in years. There is a sprouted version, Ezekiel, that tastes exactly like grape nuts. If you pass a health food store, try a box. They are pretty tasty.
ReplyDeletei love oatmeal, so I will have to try this. Not gonna lie: am fearing the no sugar bit. I'm a total junkie. So thanks for sharing this coz I actually do like grape nuts and oatmeal.
ReplyDeleteI used to eat Grape Nuts back in the day but I would always end up eating way more than I wanted. I could never remember that a little bit of that cereal goes a long way!
ReplyDeleteJust be careful to not find a favorite carb source and go overboard with it. Keep mixing it up, bread, rice, pasta, grains, mix mix mix.
ReplyDeleteMan, I never even thought about that. One thing to note about chips that I learned a while ago - Doritos have 20 ingredients. I have no idea what they are because i'm not some kind of junk food savant. Compare this to Fritos which have only three: Corn, Salt, Oil.
